NESTLED BETWEEN THE MOUNTAINS THAT FORMS THE GREAT KANAWHA VALLEY SOME TWENTY-FIVE MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE STATE CAPITAL OF CHARLESTON IS CEDAR GROVE, WV. ITS NAME DERIVED FROM THE LARGE JUNIPER FOREST THAT WAS MISIDENTIFIED AS CEDARS BY THE EARLY SETTLERS WAS INCORPORATED IN 1902.

ITS ROOTS HOWEVER GO MUCH FURTHER BACK TO THE SETTLEMENT OF FORT KELLEY DATING BACK TO 1773, MAKING IT THE OLDEST SETTLEMENT IN THE KANWAHA VALLEY. ON THE HILL OVERLOOKING THE AREA WHERE THE SCHOOL WAS LOCATED IS THE OLD VIRGINIA CHAPEL ALSO CALLED “THE LITTLE BRICK CHURCH” AND SLAVE CEMETERY WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1853. IT WAS BUILT AS A GIFT FOR WM. THOMPKINS’ DAUGHTER VIRGINIA. ITS HISTORY WILL SEE IT USED BY BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH TROOPS DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

THIS IS THE SITE OF A HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS FIRST OPENED IN 1955 WITH THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS IN 1957. IT’S MASCOT A TRAILBLAZER, A MOUNTAIN MAN WHO SEEKS TO OPEN NEW PATHS THROUGH THE WILD COUNTY, A PIONEER, AN INVENTOR. THIS MASCOT PAID HOMAGE TO THE MOUNTAINS AROUND THE SCHOOL BUT ALSO ITS DESIRE FOR ITS STUDENTS TO BE PIONEERING INVENTORS. THE SCHOOL COLORS WERE GREEN AND WHITE.

PRIOR TO ITS OPENING, STUDENTS IN THE AREA WERE SPLIT BETWEEN EAST BANK HIGH SCHOOL IN EAST BANK, WV AND WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL IN LONDON, WV. ITS PURPOSE TO REMOVE THE PRESSURE ON EAST BANK AND THE TRANSPORTION NEEDS OF BUSING STUDENTS UP TO LONDON. THE ULTIMATE GOAL WAS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS IN THE AREA BETTER ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

AS THE ALMA MATER PROUDLY SOUNDS ITS WORDS OF PRAISE “IN THE GREAT KANAWHA VALLEY'S OLDEST TOWN, LET'S SING PRAISES TO OUR ALMA MATER, TO HER HONOR BRING STRIVING ON TO HIGH ENDEAVER FORWARD BLAZE THE TRAIL. CEDAR GROVE OUR ALMA MATER, THEE WE'LL NEVER FAIL. TRAILS WE MAKE WITH MANY MEM'RIES IN OUR SCHOOL SO DEAR, IN THE FACE OF EVERY DANGER MAY WE NEVER FEAR. STRIVING ON TO HIGH ENDEAVOR, FORWARD BLAZE THE TRAIL, CEDAR GROVE OUR ALMA MATER, THEE WE'LL NEVER FAIL”
